This commercial property is located on the corner of Grafton and Spence Streets Cairns. Built in 1984, it was formerly known for the Rydges Plaza Hotel. The property was purchased and reimagined by Think Hotel Pty Ltd, in early 2021. Soon after, The Benson Hotel, a tenant of Think Commercial, began its two-part project of revamping the building. Part one, completed 1 July 2021, includes a full refurbishment of the hotel foyer, level 3 bar and restaurant and the event spaces, and a refresh of the hotel rooms.
The building complex offers locals and tourists a great range of the ‘holiday vibe’. It hosts two hairdressers, Cartel Collective and Scene Hair, Palm Day Spa and Allabout Cairns (tourist group). The tenant mix on the ground floor compliments anchor tenant, The Benson Hotel above. While COVID restrictions caused affected hotel bookings to fall to less than 20 per cent occupancy, Ian Pirodon, General Manager of The Benson Hotel Cairns is hopeful for Cairns tourism as ‘Freedom day’ arrives.
“Earlier this year we began a massive refurbishment of our boutique hotel. Comfortable and affordable rooms are ready to welcome guests for a relaxing and indulgent holiday experience,” Mr Pirodon said.
“Due to lockdowns, bookings from interstate guests have dried up completely or are being cancelled at the last minute. We’re looking forward to the time when our hotel is humming again. It will be amazing to see happy guests enjoying our poolside oasis and all Cairns has to offer,” he said.
On the other hand, since opening locals have been enjoying the new entertainment hub. “Locals have welcomed us warmly. Our food and beverage offering is unique. The rooftop Benson Bar & Restaurant offers an engaging experience for patrons seeking to unwind or celebrate.”
